New Jersey traffic barriers: an efficient way to increase road traffic safety

New Jersey traffic barriers have been used on the roads of the US, Germany, Italy, France, Scandinavia, and Australia for more than 60 years. As a result, death rate from road traffic accidents has dropped by 50% to 70%. Multi-year research by General Motors confirm that there is almost zero probability of a car being rolled over or making a transverse turn due to the collision with New Jersey traffic barriers.
These barriers become increasingly popular in Russia: they are used for the separation of traffic on contraflow motorways; as retaining walls on rough terrains; in areas with high road traffic accident rates; as barriers during road works, etc.
New Jersey barriers:
  • Are cost-effective: the cost of operation and maintenance of reinforced concrete barriers are lower than those of the structures made of other materials;
  • Can be easily replaced if damaged;
  • Have higher impact severity than barriers made of other materials.
These traffic barriers are moulded in special steel moulds, either single-cavity or double-cavity ones. New Jersey barriers are sized based on the impact severity required. Barrier blocks can be one-sided, two-sided, cross walk ones and end ones. Rebar runs inside each block, ending with locks on both edges. Concrete blocks are connected by means of these locks and form a single chain, which withstands the impact of a multi-ton vehicle, preventing breakthrough of the barrier and keeping a car on the road.
